The winning streak has grown to 19 straight for the Lady Mt'neers basketball team, as they cruised through the Class 3 District 12 tournament held in Mt. Vernon last week, defeating Diamond (95-17), Seneca (67-33) and Lamar (69-34).

In the semi-final contest against Seneca, Mt. Vernon scored 10 of the first 12 points, with four different Lady Mt'neers scoring, to take a lead they would never give up. By the end of the first quarter, Mt. Vernon had hit four 3-pointers and applied a steady dose of full-court pressure and built a 14-point edge, 24-10.

The second quarter saw more of the same, as Mt. Vernon allowed the Lady Indians just two points to lead at the half 34-12.

The defensive pressure continued to open the second half but the highlight for Seneca was scoring two baskets in a row for the first time in the game at the 5:10 mark of the third quarter. After three periods, the Lady Mt'neers led 57-28.

With the mercy clock in the fourth quarter, Mt. Vernon still scored 10 points to get the win 67-33 and advance to the district title game against Lamar.

Mt. Vernon junior Caitlin Hicks led Mt. Vernon with 18 points. Three other Lady Mt'neers scored in double-figures, including 14 for Cameron Call, 12 for Camryn Eldridge and 10 for Lacy Stokes.

In the championship game against Lamar, whom Mt. Vernon had beaten at Lamar just two weeks prior, the Lady Mt'neers came out on fire, hitting its first seven shots and forcing 10 of Lamar's 22 turnovers, to lead 19-7 after one quarter. The Lady Tigers led 2-0 to open the game but never saw the lead again.

Seven more forced turnovers by the Lady Mt'neers in the second quarter made it a 23-point lead at the half, 35-12. Call scored the final eight points of the second quarter, including two long 3-pointers for Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring Lamar by 12 in the final two quarters to win the game easily, 69-34.

Call led all scorers with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Hicks added 16 points, while Stokes had 14 and Eldridge chipped in nine. All-together, Mt. Vernon hit eight 3-pointers in the win.

Mt. Vernon (27-2) will now face Strafford, who is the defending Class 3 state champion and winners of 78 games in a row. The Strafford Lady Indians, who defeated Mt. Vernon for the championship of this winter's Pink and White Tournament, also defeated the Lady Mt'neers in last season's Class 3 state sectional. The two teams will face off at Willard Wednesday, Feb. 28, with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
