Mt. Vernon’s girl’s basketball program lost just three games this season. The problem was that two of those losses, including Wednesday’s Class 3 state sectional game, came at the hands of the Strafford Lady Indians, who have won 79 straight games and two state championships.

The second quarter was the beginning of the end for Mt. Vernon, as they were outscored 23-2 in the quarter.

One quarter in, the Lady Mt’neers team had held its own, battling with the mighty Lady Indians and trailing by just four, 16-12.

But Strafford’s half-court defense in the second quarter forced Mt. Vernon to change the offensive plan they had put into place. Strafford’s guards forced the Lady Mt’neers perimeter players to open up the middle, playing into the hands of what Strafford does best, intimidating anyone who comes into the middle with 6’2” Hayley Frank.

The baskets didn’t come in the second quarter for Mt. Vernon, but came in plentiful for Strafford as they rolled to a 25-point lead by the half, 39-14.

The Lady Mt’neers showed fi ght in the second half, but couldn’t claw its way out of the first-half hole. Mt. Vernon’s Cameron Call scored all five of her game points in the third quarter, as she endured stifling defensive pressure all night long.

Mt. Vernon fi nished the game scoring the final 11 points to pull within 26, 69-43.

Lacy Stokes led Mt. Vernon with 13 points. Caitlin Hicks added eight.
